Mine leaked too. This is not uncommon at all in our gtis. Mechanic pros I went to saw that VW only installs 6 out of 8 bolts on the RMS and my leak occurred right where one bolt was left off. If ur ding tranny work, replace the RMS and bring extra bolts. Gl.
I then franticly googled and searched the maintenance manual. Eventually, I found this thread. Related note, the oil cooler bracket goes by a lot of names: "Auxiliary Components Bracket" (service manual name), "Oil Cooler Bracket," "Alternator Bracket" (this brings up the most google results), "AC Compressor Bracket" and "Oil filter housing
I've got a 2021 GTI that I changed the engine oil/filter in at 1900 miles(VW 508 spec 0w-20 and OEM filter). I put 6 quarts in it and the level was perfect on the dipstick. The car doesn't get driven hard as my wife mostly drives it. When I checked the oil level today it was just below the minimum level!
In the subsequent 6000 miles it consumed about 1/2-3/4 a quart. So it either slowed down a lot after break in, or it was low from the factory (you do the maths). I have some other oil / engine issues though. Need to see a dealer. Some consume zero oil, some consume a little.
The oil drains down to the oil pan, unscrew the housing but do not remove completely. Let it sit for about 1 min (oil will drain down) and then remove the housing and replace the seal. Checked the new oil filter and so far so good. Unfortunately the garbage men already came so my old filter was long gone. Tried a magnet in the old oil and didn’t turn anything up. Will do an oil change in 1,000 miles and inspect. No knocking or otherwise strange behavior.
Finally, refill the engine with oil. Be sure to use an oil that carries the dexos2 approval. This oil, Rowe SYNT RS DLS shows the approval on the front label. The 2.8L takes just over 5 liters/quarts of oil. So put in 5 liters/quarts first and check the oil level to see how much you need to add.
