Help I can't log in The starter (at least for the petrol engines) sits on the back of the engine facing the fire wall. The starter is held onto the engine/gearbox by 3 bolts.

The person who wrote the post must have found it easier to access the starter by removing the battery tray. Haynes doesn't mention removing the battery
Ihave a 2006 1.6HDi version which needs a new starter and have struggled with removing it. I have managed to get to 2 of the bolts from underneath. I had 3 goes at changing the starter on my 307 1.6 HDi, but failed. I guess the exhaust is in the way from underneath. Thenwe remove them with a deep socket 1/4" drive so we don't put to much pressure on them. they should screw out easily but we turn them out 1 whole turn then back a 1/4 add a little more diesel ( thimble full) & gently screw them out. If they start to get really tight screw in again a little then screw out again.
Its s right git of a job! One bolt from the top, but it's under the thermostat housing and is invisible. The other 2 from the bottom, one is easy on the bottom of the starter, the other is invisible over the top - I never managed to get this one out on my 307, despite about 3 tries! you need a 6mm allen on an extension of just the right length slid in
