The Spadone was a heavy bastard sword obtained by Ezio Auditore da Firenze during the 16th century. During his attempt to erode the Borgia's power, he purchased the weapon from a blacksmith in Rome after renovating 10 blacksmith shops. The Spadone is a style of Italian greatsword. In reality, a historic spadone would have more closely resembled the game's Spada Lunga. Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

The game opens in 1499 immediately after the end of Assassin's Creed II, and centers around Ezio Auditore's continuing conflict against the power-hungry and Templar-aligned Borgia family in Rome at the time of the early Italian Wars, and his efforts to restore the local Assassin Brotherhood to its former glory.

The Sanctuary was a secret chamber located beneath the Villa Auditore in Monteriggioni, used by the Assassin Order during the Renaissance and modern times. The Sanctuary was accessed primarily through an entrance hidden behind a bookshelf in Mario Auditore's study in the Villa. The Sanctuary's most notable feature was its statues of seven legendary Assassins, who had "guarded the freedom of

IMO, an Assassin would want a faster, more agile main weapon (I know there's the knives, but I'm not talking short-range), plus, a sword is just a much more elegant weapon than a mace, bastard sword (it's not Conan's Creed), or an axe. A sword can also pierce a vital organ/artery, so either instantly killing, or a quick bleed-out.
