You don't have to charge your infantry at all, it's enough if your opponent does that. Your companions will be right in the middle of the meat grinder, because that's where they always get placed - right in the middle of the first infantry line. Even with half way decent equpment, they die in like 8 out of 10 battles.

It should be as easy as commenting them out of module_troops and the corresponding dialogue references in module_scripts and module_strings, but when I do that, the remaining companions dialogues get completely screwed up, with some intros going to the wrong people, etc. But all I really need

I believe there is an option in the Settings menu somewhere to disable them, and there might be a little box you check on the hint popups to prevent them from appearing more. OK I just uninstalled the mod as I was unable to get it to remember/save the perk selection on my companion I edited. I did create a folder in Documents> Mount and Blade II Bannerlord called CharacterReload as someone on the Nexus thread said to do that. I can just use the console commands which is a bit of a PITA but works.
